Coping with the Loss of Yourself During Your Eating Disorder Recovery

Behaviors exhibited in eating disorders from binge eating to starving and over-exercise are coping mechanisms for dealing with negative emotions. When entering treatment, you are forced to be confronted with these emotions. Like other illnesses, you can go through stages of grief that need to be managed. Denial, anger, bargaining, and depression are common stages of the grief process and each needs to be dealt with in ways unique to you in order to achieve acceptance and follow the road to recovery.
