Episode 71: Eating Disorders and Neuroscience Part 2

Today is the conclusion of our 2-part conversation on eating disorders and neuroscience with Dr. Michael Levine, Dr. Laura Hill, and Dr. Janet Treasure.

Michael P. Levine, Ph.D., is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Kenyon College (Ohio) and a Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders. In the eating disorders field he focuses on sociocultural risk factors, prevention, community psychology, and gender. Levine has authored or co-edited six books, three prevention curriculum guides, and just over a 100 articles and book chapters.

Laura Hill, PhD: 
Dr. Laura Hill is the President & Chief Executive Office of The Center for Balanced Living. She is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at The Ohio State University.

She has been publishing in peer reviewed journals since the mid 1980’s with increasing focus on biologically based treatment for anorexia nervosa. She has developed a new, brain-based treatment for anorexia nervosa with colleagues at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). She and UCSD colleagues are the recipients of the Feeding Hope award by the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA).

In addition, Dr. Hill is the recipient of the Muskingum University Distinguished Service Award in 2014 and the NEDA 2011 Lori Irving Award for Excellence in Eating Disorders Prevention and Awareness. She is a 2012 TEDx speaker and has spoken internationally over the last 35 years.

She is one of the original founders of the Academy for Eating Disorders in 1993 and was Director of The National Eating Disorder Organization, now known as NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), from 1990 to 1994.

Janet Treasure, OBE PhD FRCP FRCPsych:
Professor Janet Treasure has specialised in the treatment of eating disorders at the South London and Maudsley Hospital and also has had an academic career Kings College London for the majority of her career. The unit is one of the premier European academic centres for eating disorders. We have co-produced interventions with recovered patients and carers using some of the newest technologies including iPod, DVDs and web based as part of our interventions.  She was made a Professor of Psychiatry in 2000.  In 2013 she was given an OBE for her work in eating disorders. Her research has led to greater understanding of, and better treatments for, anorexia and bulimia.  As well as editing professional texts, Janet has written several self help books for people with eating disorders (Schmidt & Treasure, 1993; Treasure, 1997). Guided self-help using books such as these are recommended in the NICE guidelines as a first stage of treatment.

She works with Prof K Ishmael to manage people with diabetes and eating disorders in particular those that require inpatient care. She was on the NICE guideline for eating disorder in 2005 and 2017.  She is a trustee of the charity Diabetes with Eating disorders (DWED) and medical advisor for BEAT and student minds.
