Athletes are very susceptible to developing eating disorders which can adversely affect both their health and performance. Athletes are often given no guidelines for their diet or adopt poor eating habits, especially calorie-cutting. Strength coaches and personal trainers need to learn to spot the signs (including overtraining and underperforming) and be willing to initiate treatment when necessary. A private conversation with the athlete is recommended with the help of a guidance counselor or sports psychologist when necessary. There are treatment programs available to teach healthy living and they should be sought out. Early recognition and treatment is essential to help athletes suffering from an eating disorder.
