Anyone in recovery can experience a relapse, a deterioration in the condition after a period of improvement. Relapse is common and can be part of the pattern of recovery. Instead of using the word relapse, we can instead call use the word “refocus”. Take the setback as a time to refocus your recovery journey and seek help if needed. You can use your refocusing time to identify the problem and address it. Recovery is not a linear process, there are cycles that you go through, it’s best to embrace them and move on.
